Watercolor Optical Illusion
This is an example of the watercolor effect. This effect was first demonstrated by Baingio Pinna in 1987.
Simply put The watercolor effect is perceived when a dark (e.g., purple) contour is flanked by a lighter chromatic contour (e.g., orange). Under these conditions, the lighter color will assimilate over the entire enclosed area.
What does that mean? Take a look at the below image. You see 9 distinct squares. The center of each square looks white but the outer area of each square has taken on a watercolor shade, pink, green, yellow, blue etc...

The truth is that aside from the squiggly lines the only color here is white. The outer ring and the inner square are pure white.
Prove It: You can prove this by using the eye dropper tool in either of the following free graphics programs Paint.Net or Gimp or you can use the eye dropper tool in the free Colorzilla extension for Firefox browser. When you use these tools you will find that RGB value of everywhere on this image that is not a squiggly line is R:255 G:255 B:255 or #FFFFFF.
Print out this image and slide it into a plastic document protector. Now use an earasable marker and you have a reusable optical illusion Tic-Tac-Toe board.

Flatiron Building Optical Illusion
This is the back side of the Flatiron building in Toronto, Canada. The mural was done by Derek Besant and installed in 1980. The building itself was built in 1892 and is unique in its own right, view it from the front.

Ponzo Optical Illusion
The Ponzo illusion is an optical illusion that was first demonstrated by the Italian psychologist Mario Ponzo (1882-1960) in 1913. He suggested that the human mind judges an object's size based on its background.
The typical example of this is the figure below. This is the typical railroad track scheme usually used to represent this illusion. The vertical lines appear to go off into the distance like train tracks. This gives us the impression that the line in the distance is larger then the line that appears to be nearer to the viewer.
Seeing this illusion against a great real photo backdrop can be amazing. Most of the time people pick train tracks. Below is an outstanding photo that presents this optical illusion slightly different...
The two red lines (or three if you move your mouse over the image) below are duplicates, they are the exact same size. Which image is more convincing the one with two lines or the one with three lines?
Project: Create your own illusion. Here is a suitable image of train tracks (right click and select "save target as" or "save link as" depending on your browser). You can use Windows Picture and Fax viewer to print it out.
Now that you have it printed try and create your own illusion.
Use 2 Popsicle sticks painted red or just draw red lines with a marker.
Does changing the color change the effect?
Does using two different colors alter the illusion?
Try fat and skinny lines. Does the thickness of the lines affect this illusion?
Vary the distance between the lines, does this change the effect?
Is a three dimensional Popsicle stick as effective as 2 dimensional red line?
Does the distance from which you view the illusion change the illusion?
What can you conclude, if anything, about how we perceive things from this project?

Elephant Painted Illusion
This is similar to the painted illusion, I previously done a nude girl illusion where a author has made a amazing painting on a old man's head to create a illusion, this is something similar to the painted illusion, A annnymous has made a fantastic painting on the hand which look like a Elephant. This optical illusion was discovered by the German physiologist Ewald Hering in 1861. The two blue lines are both straight and parallel to each other. If you are like most folks you may see things differently. The lines in fact may look as if they are bowed outward.

The distortion is produced by the lined pattern on the background, that simulates a perspective design, and creates a false impression of depth. If you pass your mouse over the image the background lines will be removed and you can see for yourself that the blues lines are definitely straight.
Project: Create your own illusion. Select a sheet of paper and place a dot in the center of the sheet. Now draw 10 lines through the center, mimicking as close as you can the background of the above illusion. Now on a sheet of clear document protector draw your two vertical lines.
Increase the amount of background lines to 18. Does that affect the illusion?
Does changing the color of the background change the effect?
Does changing the color of the background lines change the effect?
Does using two different colors for the vertical lines alter the illusion?

This a very clever photo taken of a new product called Cumulus-in-a-Can or at least that is what the photo artist says,
This was one of many attempts at getting this shot just right. In the end though this outstanding photo, the best of the bunch, has one basic flaw.

"Cumulus in a can... You can buy anything these days! :) "Despite appearances this image was not photoshopped. I have heard people point to the fact that the sky is a different color blue around the can as proof. To those I would only point out that that is the way the sky is with light fluffy clouds floating around. Besides you can go to this large image and take a closer look.

Checker Shadow Optical Illusion
This is the Checker Shadow Optical Illusion. It was developed by Edward H. Adelson of the Perceptual Science Group at MIT. The interesting thing about the below optical illusion is that square A is the exact same shade of gray as square B.
One way to identify a color is by it's Red, Green, Blue values or RGB for short. When written for 24 bit truecolor R:0 G:0 B:0 is black and at the other end of the spectrum R:255 G:255 B:255 is white. The other 16 million or so colors fall somewhere in between. Squares A and B below each have the same RGB value of R:120 G:120 B:120.
So now that I said it is true you have all obviously accepted the fact that square A and square B are indeed the exact same shade of gray, right? I mean if it is on the internet it must be true. Would it be easier if you could prove it to yourself and any skeptics you might run into (like Mom and Dad or that annoying sibling). Continue on and we'll get around to proving my statements correct.
Project: Proving square "A" is the same shade of gray as square "B".
There are a few ways you can prove that the 2 squares are the same shade.
Before we continue, right click on the image and open it in a new window. Now you have a giant image to work with.
1) You can use a graphics program like Photoshop, Paint.Net, Gimp or the Colorzilla extension for Firefox browser.
My choice is Colorzilla w/Firefox. Using the eyedropper tool you can determine
that the RGB values of the grays in both square A and square B are 120-120-120.
Not good enough for you, heh? Still not ready to trust that the computer is correct or you don't have an eyedropper tool? Either way you can move on to step 2 or 3 below.
2) Cut out a cardboard mask.
By viewing patches of the squares without the surrounding context, you can remove the effect of the illusion. A piece of cardboard with two holes created in the right spots will work as a mask for a computer screen or as a mask for a the printed illusion. Holding up this mask to the image on the screen or printed paper should be enough to convince you. But if you were like my daughter nothing but this next step would do.
3) Print the image and cut out the squares.
This is another way to isolate the patches from their surrounding context. Cut out each square along the edges. Remove them. Hold them side by side. Overlap the cut out
squares. Yup they're the same shade of gray. No denying it now, is there?
Please note that I have heard that some printers have "enhancement" processing that increases the contrast of edges. This can cause the printed squares to have slightly different values of gray. I haven't run into one of these printers yet where the overlapped squares didn't look identical, but your mileage may vary.
WHY you ask? You might have come to terms with the fact that the two squares are the same shade of gray, but how does this optical illusion work? The creator of the illusion has an explanation here.

The Hidden Tiger Optical Illusion
This must be the toughest optical illusion I have ever come across, created by American wildlife artist Rusty Rust, that shows a huge Bengal Tiger standing in a bamboo forest. Your mission now is to look for “The Hidden Tiger” in the image below, where is the hidden tiger?
Acrobats in Optical Illusions
While cruising the internet I came across the Acrobats Illusion Video below, this mention of acrobats and illusions reminded me of the below painting by Rob Gonsalves. He has an excellent eye for transitioning from the normal to the surreal.

Crooked Man's Optical Illusion
Here is another excellent illusion. Looking at this image things seem a little out of sorts.
Is it leaning to one side?
The truth is that each square that makes this image up is the exact same size. Some have white borders and some have black borders but the whole image is plumb. That is to say that the lines vertical and horizontal are all respectively parallel to each other.
To paraphrase a nursery rhyme despite the title above this is not the "The Crooked Man's Optical Illusion"

Real World Cafe Wall Optical Illusion
This famous illusion is very effective in this example. The tiles are all square and all horizonal lines are parallel to each other. The history of this can be read here in a previous post.
I think the caution sign is very appropriate given the fact that this wall messes with your perception of reality.

Tornado Optical Illusion

Bezold Effect Illusion
The Bezold Effect is an optical illusion, named after a German professor of eteorology, Wilhelm von Bezold, who discovered that a color may appear different depending on its relation to adjacent colors. In the above example, the red seems lighter combined with the white, and darker combined with the black.

Jastrow Size Optical Illusion
The Jastrow illusion is an optical illusion discovered by the American psychologist Joseph Jastrow in 1889. In this image, the two figures are identical, although the bottom one appears to be larger.
So you look at the above and say OK maybe they are the same size. You can even see that it is true. How about the photo below, is it possible that these two are the same size?
Even knowing that the two above are the same size it is hard to believe. Look at them how is it possible for them to be the same size? Well you don't have to take my word for it, check out the video below. This time Seeing is believing!

Three Cubes Optical Illusion
Here is another interesting illusion. When I first looked at this image I saw three cubes that had been folded from a paper cutout. The cubes looked a little sloppy and deformed. But the truth dawned on me and I realized that these are three perfectly shaped cubes, each represented by flat sides and proper angles. It is just the checker pattern that causes these cubes to look deformed. Well Done Herman!

DIY Dragon Optical Illusion
Below are two videos of Dragons that have been created by folding paper. They are not motorized in any fashion and at no point in either video do the dragon's move in the slightest.
However due the way they are folded and an optical illusion they will all appear to follow the camera. First user jdannan on YouTube.com shares this video of his pet dragon.
Second user leezbot on YouTube.com shares this video of a small dragon family. The family is very nice and I believe that the little blue dragon above originated with this family before striking out on his own.
If you would like to create your own pet dragon click the below image and download the large image to your computer. Then using A4 size paper print out the template and follow the directions.

Spiral Optical Illusion
Here is another amazing illusion with a sense of motion. As you scan your eyes across the image the spirals provide the illusion of rotating.

3-D Model of Escher's Ascending and Descending Optical Illusion
The below 3-D model of Escher's Ascending and Descending was created by John Atkinson using Hash Inc.'s Animation:Master. John says, "Over the Christmas holiday of 2001, I was reading "Escher on Escher" and became taken with the notion of attempting to create a computer model of the subject of one of my favorite Escher illustrations--the cluster of buildings in his work entitled "Ascending and Descending". This was one of what have been termed his "Impossibility Series"."John also provided a little peak behind the scenes of this image. You can check out a video clip that let's you walk around the stairs just as if you were one of the monks. This allows you in on a little secret of how this optical illusion was accomplished in a 3D model.

Zollner Motion Optical Illusion
Even though the basic illusion here is based on the Zollner illusion there is also a lot of anomalous motion indicated in this optical illusion. The four columns are all parallel to each other, but some viewing this might experience the columns as leaning toward or going away from one another.

Escheresque Waterbridge Illusion?
Here is a very unusual site. At first glance my instinct was to think there is something wrong with this picture. The image reminded me of something out of a M.C. Escher drawing.
The bottom line though is that this is indeed what it looks like a waterbridge. This bridge opened for business in 2003.

South Pole After Image Optical Illusion
The nature of this optical illusion is to paint a grey scale image using only your eyes.
Below is Lieutenant John Bortniak out for a stroll at the South Pole.
Focus on his nose in the center for 30-45 seconds then move your mouse over and the image it will then swap to the grey scale image, but you will see the original image in all it's glory.

Stare at the image below. It will show the negative image for 10 seconds and the gray scale image for 1 second. The longer you look at it the more pronounced the effect.

Sexy Silhouette Optical Illusion
I love good silhouettes. They are almost always ambiguous. When dealing with a silhouette the subject can be looking toward you or away from you and the lines can be drawn in to show either perspective.

Cascading Lines Optical Illusion
This optical illusion is based on the Poggendorff Illusion. In that illusion we saw that diagonal lines passing through a rectangle could be deceptive. Below we have horizontal bars passing through diagonal spaces. While viewing this illusion it is easy to be drawn into the perception that each set of lines is a little lower each time they pass through the blue gaps.
You and I know the truth though. All we have here are horizontal lines that run straight and true across the entire illusion. Excellent work Herman.

WikipediaIt can be a very strong illusion at first. Trying to line up the top and bottom lines so they meet can be tricky. Most of us though will not be fooled for long and some may not be fooled at all. I can align the two lines just about every time now. It has reached the point that I doubt if it will be a challenge for anyone. Maybe it never was a strong illusion, sometimes my memory plays tricks on me. This illusion seems to be stronger with kids.
The Poggendorff Illusion is an optical illusion that involves the brain's perception of the interaction between diagonal lines and horizontal and vertical edges. It is named after Johann Poggendorff (1796-1877), a German physicist who first described it in 1860.

dog or a towel Illusion
Is this really a dog, or a towel?
Sure enough, this is a photograph of a dog, lying on a towel or some sort of linens. Awfully tired, the poor doggy has closed his eyes for the afternoon and must be taking a short cat-nap. Or... umm.. dog nap I guess you would all it.
Notice how through years and years of evolution, this dog has learned how to blend in to his surroundings to be camaflauged from his predators - or more likely, just hidden enough to sneak away from the daily chores and take a well deserved nap.
Makes you want to go get one of these little babies, doesn't it? Well, this type of dog is called a Shar-Pei. Why not go adopt one, although they don't stay this cute and cuddly all their life! Alhtough they do make great pets!

World's Largest Lightness Optical Illusion
This illusion was one of the ten finalists in the 1st annual (2005) "Best Visual Illusion of the Year" contest. It was billed as the "World's Largest Lightness Illusion." In all of the below images the letters, figures, chess pieces, and orbs and their counterparts are all the exact same color. For a detailed explanation read this article in Nature (Image segmentation and lightness perception) or read their shorter explanation submitted with their illusion here. Let's take each image one at a time.
The EVCP, 2005 and the human figures on the left are identical in color to their counterparts on the right, click on the image to view a 4960 x 3508 pixel size image. Scroll back and forth and try to see these figures as the exact same color they are.
Still not convinced maybe a static example isn't good enough click on the image below and view another example of this illusion in motion. Quicktime is required to view this illusion. Both the left and the right orbs are the exact same color at every moment.

If the movie was hard to believe you could do what I did and capture the screen, print out the image then cut out each orb. This will prove beyond a doubt that the orbs are the same color. If you don't have time to go through the above steps you can just check out my last example. Move your mouse over the image and you effectively see the chess pieces as if you cut them all out.
